Room for two more?

If you have ever been to Wagamama during peak times you would have experienced that uncomfortable feeling when the waitress leads new customers towards the place settings next to you on an already crowded table... the Afghan Kitchen on Upper Street Islington however was something else...

Despite Wagamama's communal tables and the inability to have any sort of private conversation during the peak times, I still bloody love it (especially the Yaki Udon)! However the Afghan Kitchen was just a bit too much.

We booked the table for 7.30 on a Saturday evening, which by London's standards is still pretty early. I say this because before booking the table we read the numerous reviews about how you literally sat elbow-to-elbow to the couple next to you, which we assumed would be at peak busy times (late evening).

Walking into the Afghan Kitchen we were hit with AMAZING ,smells and I couldn't wait to try the food. At this point there didn't seem to be a problem with the seating arrangements, although there was one reserved table by the door that kept opening which I wasn't keen on. Thankfully we weren't sat there, however what waited for us upstairs was far worse.

As we walked up the stairs I could see that there were several tables, one of which was for at most a table of four which two sets of couples currently sat and were tucking into some gorgeous looking food. To our horror (and theirs) the waitress began to set two places up for us in between these two couples, resulting in them having to shuffle down. The stares we got were unreal, it was as if they thought we hadn't bothered to book. We didn't really want to squish in there, and neither did they. So we left.

We are not snobs, but we felt that we would feel too uncomfortable and so ended up having another lovely meal at one of my favourite places also on Upper Street: Cuba Libra.

I think we wil try and go there again, but maybe at an earlier time, less busy night or as a group of six.
